Pattern Databases

چکیده
The efficiency of A* searching depends on the quality of the lower bound estimates of the solution cost. Pattern databases enumerate all possible subgoals required by any solution, subject to constraints on the subgoal size. Each subgoal in the database provides a tight lower bound on the cost of achieving it. For a given state in the search space, all possible subgoals are looked up in the pattern database, with the maximum cost over all lookups being the lower bound. For sliding tile puzzles, the database enumerates all possible patterns containing N tiles and, for each one, contains a lower bound on the distance to correctly move all N tiles into their correct final location. For the 15-Puzzle, iterative-deepening A* with pattern databases (N=8) reduces the total number of nodes searched on a standard problem set of 100 positions by over 1000-fold.

A Method for Protecting Access Pattern in Outsourced Data
Protecting the information access pattern, which means preventing the disclosure of data and structural details of databases, is very important in working with data, especially in the cases of outsourced databases and databases with Internet access. The protection of the information access pattern indicates that mere data confidentiality is not sufficient and the privacy of queries and accesses...
متن کامل3D Face Recognition using Patch Geodesic Derivative Pattern
In this paper, a novel Patch Geodesic Derivative Pattern (PGDP) describing the texture map of a face through its shape data is proposed. Geodesic adjusted textures are encoded into derivative patterns for similarity measurement between two 3D images with different pose and expression variations. An extensive experimental investigation is conducted using the publicly available Bosphorus and BU-3...
متن کاملCompressing Pattern Databases
A pattern database is a heuristic function stored as a lookup table which stores the lengths of optimal solutions for instances of subproblems. All previous pattern databases had a distinct entry in the table for each subproblem instance. In this paper we investigate compressing pattern databases by merging several adjacent entries into one, thereby allowing the use of pattern databases that ex...
متن کاملMaximizing over multiple pattern databases speeds up heuristic search
A pattern database (PDB) is a heuristic function stored as a lookup table. This paper considers how best to use a fixed amount (m units) of memory for storing pattern databases. In particular, we examine whether using n pattern databases of size m/n instead of one pattern database of size m improves search performance. In all the state spaces considered, the use of multiple smaller pattern data...
متن کاملMulti-valued Pattern Databases
Pattern Databases were a major breakthrough in heuristic search by solving hard combinatorial problems various orders of magnitude faster than state-of-the-art techniques at that time. Since then, they have received a lot of attention. Moreover, pattern databases are also researched in conjunction with other domain-independent techniques for solving planning tasks. However, they are not the onl...
متن کاملStrengthening Canonical Pattern Databases with Structural Symmetries
Symmetry-based state space pruning techniques have proved to greatly improve heuristic search based classical planners. Similarly, abstraction heuristics in general and pattern databases in particular are key ingredients of such planners. However, only little work has dealt with how the abstraction heuristics behave under symmetries. In this work, we investigate the symmetry properties of the p...
